• Let me explain. I have a friend whose name is similar to someone else. Even her social security number is similar. Only the second to the last number on both numbers is different. She has had trouble thru the years. The other person is irresponsible, doesn't pay her credit cards debts off in time, sometimes not at all, and my friend gets her credit in trouble because of this other person. It's mistaken identity, not identity theft.
My friend has obtained credit reports from the three credit agencies but this keeps reoccurring. Her one and only credit card is useless now. She can't use it.
Time and space will not allow me to provide more info in-depth. But from what I have told you, what is the best course of action my friend can take?
    Thanks to all who answer.

  • Your friend need's to see a good lawyer and fast.

  • It is the responsibility of the vendors and credit card companies to insure that they are sending in the correct information on the person involved, if they fail to do that they are liable for damages that they cause. You can contact the companies responsible and demand they correct this situation, I would do it in writing, or if I was sure I had all the facts and was indeed in the right, I would contact a personal injury attorney to put me back in a place you were before and perhaps better off than you were before it started.

  • I would start at the local social security office and then to theIRS office and get letters from them that you have corrected the problem by changing your social security # which is allowed now and also a letter to the credit card company. Good luck

  • If the 'bad' person is using the correct name and social security number, then it is the companies that are reporting it to the credit bureau. Your friend needs to contact the companies and show proof it is not the correct person.
