A lot of places will accept plastic thermoses. Just ask them to fill it up and charge you for a large. You don't even have to say you're doing it for the environment; if they ask, just say it's more convenient since you're about to hop on the bus or something.
I agree with Dawei. Just bring your own reusable travel mug, thermos bottle, or plain old coffee cup. If they insist on pouring it into a throw-away cup first to get the correct portion, ask to see a manager about the policy. Tell them that you will not be back if they insist on wasting resources. Doing things like that really can bring change!
