• I am already applying to my top choices which are Holy Cross, Boston College, and Tufts. But given the unprecedented number of students applying to top colleges this year, I also need to apply to some safety schools. I don't want to be more than an hour from Boston and my plan is to be premed. I picked HC, BC, Tufts because they are the tops in premed in the Boston area (except Harvard which I don't have a chance at). What other schools should I apply to?

GPA 3.73 UW SAT 2130 Top 7% of class.

  • BU and Northeastern would be some solid safety schools to apply to.

  • Some lesser known safeties which are quite good are Stonehill and Wheaton.

  • HC, BC and Tufts are excellent picks for you, and for pre-med. Good.

Schools you may want to consider as backups include: BU, Northeastern, Clark, Wheaton, and Providence College.

I'd put UMass Amherst on your list, but it's more like an hour and a half from Boston. But if you don't mind that, they'd be a worthy contender. They also may give you big-time scholarships - I think you're at the SAT level where you get a free ride to a Mass public uni, right? A lot of top students pick UMass Amherst for that reason.

And a question for you, and I'm totally serious - why do you think you don't have a chance at Harvard. I think you have a chance at Harvard. Yes, it's a reach. It's certainly a reach. But do you like the school? If so, it's worth your time to try. You may not get in. But you might. It's not beyond the realm of possibility. I encourage you to look at that one again.
